True wellness involves balance in many areas of an individual's health. Dr. David Mason has put together an all-star team of our favorite wellness providers. We've worked hand-in-hand with some team members while others come highly recommended. Feel free to scout out the best players you can find, interview them and make sure that they can provide you what you need to help you create and support your wellness lifestyle.
Personal Fitness Trainer
A personal fitness trainer is someone who is trained in recommending exercise programs. This can often include recommending nutritional advice as well. Personal trainers have a variety of certification programs. You may look for a trainer who is a CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) or a CPT (Certified Personal Trainer). The most important thing is to find a trainer with whom you feel comfortable and with whom you would like to work. Knowing what to do is often the easy part; finding someone that will inspire you to stay with the program and keep you accountable to get results is the hard part. Here is short list of Dr. Mason’s local favorite personal trainers:

Christopher McClintock- Personal Best Fitness LLC:

Personal Best Fitness LLC exists for people who are ready to make a change in their life. It is a personal and private workout facility in which you and your trainer can work one on one without distraction, to meet your goals. Through sound, healthy, scientific, tried and true methods, you will lose excess body fat, you will gain muscle, you will become more flexible, and you will learn how to eat to meet your physical fitness goals.

Christopher and his staff of Personal Trainers work with those that are beginning an exercise program, as educators and motivators when it comes to each client’s personal goals.  Most importantly, Christopher insures your program will be safe and realistic and specific to your body only. This way you not only achieve the results you want, but you also have achieved them as quickly as possible.

Christopher McClintock received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Recreation from KentStateUniversity and is certified by the International Sports Sciences Association. Christopher is sponsored by Nike, Rudy Project, Gatorade and PowerBar as a marathon coach for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.

Optometrist:

Our eyes are our windows to the world. It is recommended that you be aware of your vision and make sure that you can see clearly. Visiting an optometrist helps to ensure that you are seeing correctly and ensures that for those who need are using the proper strength corrective lenses.

David J. Shen, O.D.- Vue Optique, PLLC:

Dr. Shen, a New York City native, has been involved in vision and eyecare for nearly 20 years.  He performed his undergraduate studies at CornellUniversity majoring in Neurobiology and Vision Sciences.  Subsequently, he received his doctoral degree at University of California, Berkeley where he graduated Valedictorian.  Along the way, he did internships on a Navajo reservation in Crownpoint, New Mexico, the Eye Foundation in Orlando, Florida, and the Barnet-Dulaney surgical center in Phoenix, Arizona.  He went on the perform a residency in eye disease and refractive surgery care at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, consistently ranked the #1 Eye Hospital in the United States.

Dr. Shen has held faculty positions at the University of California, Berkeley and became Founder and Director of Optometric Services at the VanderbiltLaserSightCenter with Dr. Ming Wang in 1999.  He has been featured on Channel 5’s “Talk of the Town” and national media stories discussing several topics including latest technologies in eyecare, contact lens advances and eyestrain related to computer use.  Most recently, Dr. Shen has founded several community programs including For All Kids to See, a free program designed to screen students of the FranklinSpecialSchool District for vision impairments.

Dentist:

We all know what a dentist does. The dental profession has done an exceptional job teaching people about wellness. Although some people do not go to the dentist until they are in pain, few people argue that it is a good idea to see your dentist for preventative care and optimal hygiene. How you take care of your teeth is often a great analogy for how you should think about taking care of your spine.

Podiatrist:

Podiatrists are responsible for diagnosing and treating foot, ankle, and lower leg disorders, including sports and other injuries. Podiatrists use a range of clinical, surgical, and therapeutic techniques to treat patients. They give professional advice on the prevention of foot problems and on proper care of the foot. Podiatrists work in private practices, hospitals, and clinics.

Pilates Instructor:

Pilates has become one of the fastest growing forms of strengthening your core muscles. There are new Pilates studios in cities nationwide. Developed in the 1920s by the legendary Discover Wellness 196 physical trainer and founder of The New York Pilates Studio, Joseph H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Not surprisingly, some of the first people to use the Pilates Method were dancers. The Pilates Method is not just exercise, however. It is a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by extensively trained teachers.

Yoga Instructor:

Yoga is an ancient system of practices originating in India. It is aimed at integrating mind, body and spirit to enhance health and well-being. There are many different forms of yoga. Hatha yoga, the most widely practiced form of yoga in the Western world, uses specific postures and breathing exercises. Yoga studios are opening up in cities everywhere. Often fitness centers will offer yoga classes as well. Find somewhere convenient to where you live or work and take advantage of their introductory programs. Almost all studios have specials for people just looking to check it out. So go and check it out.

Massage Therapist:

Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Massage works on the soft tissues (the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body. Although a single massage will be enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits. Massage can help reduce fatigue, leaving the person with a feeling of replenished energy. At its best, massage has the potential to restore the individual physically, mentally and spiritually. Rates can range from $50 to $125 per hour depending on who and where you are receiving your massage. You can expect to pay more for someone who is willing to travel to your home of for a spa massage.

My name is Jason Kiick and I am a Licensed Massage Therapist. I graduated in March of 2007 from Cumberland Institute of Holistic Therapies, in Brentwood, TN. The instruction and hands on training that I received has prepared me to come to the revelation of who I am as a massage therapist as well as what I can do to help those around me not only physically but emotionally and spiritually as well.

It is my belief that the body, given the right environment, intention and care, can heal itself. Our bodies were made in the image of the Creator and it is our job to take care of it. As previously stated, I believe massage can affect a person physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is my goal as a massage therapist to facilitate such opportunity for healing by creating a safe environment by being present, intent, and aware of the needs and desires of the client. It is my desire not only to help people feel better but help them stay better.

A day spa is a business establishment which people visit for professionally administered personal care treatments. It is similar to a beauty salon in that it is only visited for the duration of the treatment. In contrast, a destination spa offers the same services in a hotel setting where people reside for one or more days. Services found in a spa setting may include (check with each facility): facials, massage, waxing, body treatments such as body wraps, aromatherapy, skin exfoliation — including chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
